People, right?

Let’s say I were to come into a large sum of money. If I were using it to start a youth sports program from scratch what would I spend the money on?

Of course, I would spend money for the space, equipment, jerseys, and just overall keeping the light on. But to be perfectly honest, most of the money would be spent on human resources:  Recruiting, hiring, and training quality coaches and personnel and paying them equitably. People make the decisions. People interact with the players and coaches. People have to distribute all those fancy uniforms and equipment. And someone has to be responsible for turning on the lights. And you definitely want the right person filling all those roles.

Now, you probably don’t have a windfall of money coming through the revitalize your programming. But it is still necessary for you to take the limited resources that you do have to ensure you have the right people on staff. Take some time to think through your hiring processes, how you train your coaches and staff, and how you take care of and celebrate the people you work with.

You don’t have to win the lottery start practicing better people management.  What can you do now to help your coaches and staff get what they need to show up powerfully throughout the season, throughout their tenure with your program?
