You thought you would love it. You got into to coaching because you thought that you could make a difference. But now you find that it has taken up all of your time. You are coaching in an unerresourced area, so quite a bit of your time is spent being player transport and trying to find money to support your players fees. You know that you are firmly planted in your athletes’ lives, but you can’t escape the emotional toll of learning about and trying to address their struggles. You know that you are making a difference, but now you are exhausted, burned out, and thinking of quitting.
I don’t think we talk enough about managing coach burnout, especially coaches who are extremely dedicated to their jobs. We definitely don’t talk enough about the ways to support coach well-being. And that is a problem. If our coaches aren’t well, if coaches are struggling, will that not have an impact on how they show up to practices and games.
How can we better support coaches, so they can stay in the game longer?
