Are you doing too much?

You finally have seen the light when it comes to sports-based youth development. You wanted to start incorporating all of the tenets in your practices, but now you are exhausted and questioning whether or not you should even try this. I mean you were struggling to even fit in stretching before and now you are up to your whistle in lesson planning as you try to incorporate philosophical discussions on emotions, team building, career development, and worksheets into your 50 minute practice session. I just want to say I commend you for your eagerness to shape the development of your athletes. However this might be a bit much. If you were to reign it in to focus on the most important thing, you should start with relationships.

Everything happens in the context of relationships. If you can focus on improving the health of the relationships you have with your players and that they have with each other, that would go a long way. Before you move on to try and revolutionize things with lesson plans, start with evolving how you treat each other. Start with making sure your athletes feel supported, seen, and cared for. And the rest will build from there.
