In one ear

When I get online, I spend most of my time receiving messages. I watch videos. I read blogs. I take in what others are saying. I receive a lot of messages, and then that is that. I know that I received a lot of information, but if you ask me the next day all what I watched or read, I couldn’t really tell you.

You might feel like the opposite when you’re coaching. You feel like you’re the one feeding out information, only to have your players and parents not really getting it.  What is the issue? You have to learn how to communicate. I didn’t say you need to learn how to talk. I didn’t say that you were bad at giving speeches. I said that you have to learn how to communicate.

You have to consider you players and parents as an audience you want deliver a message to. You need to take all of the information that you want to share and make it relevant to them. Which means, I am so sorry, you have to take in their feedback. Yeah, this has to be a back and forth. You have to consider them as partners in the conversation and listen to them right back. Yes, even that parent. You don’t have to agree, you just have to listen.

How are you listening to your players and parents?
