What did you want your team to be?

To say that you feel overwhelmed would be to put it lightly.  You got into coaching because you wanted to change lives. You wanted to be a support system. You want kids to see their true potential. And yet you feel like instead you are spending all of you time disciplining and are so busy dealing with bad behavior you’ve lost track of what you even wanted your team to be.

Think about it this way. You’re doing your best to make you team feel welcoming and safe. But you have forgotten the kids on your team have a hand in creating your team environment and culture. Why not make it official.

You can and should invite your players to help you create your team culture. This can start at the beginning of the season with a guided team activity to make a team agreement, or expectations for behaviors they will hold themselves and teammates to. You can leverage your captains to really set the standards from behavior. And I’m sure you can think of so many more ways. But it is not all on you. You’ve got a whole team behind you. Use them.
